I havent tried any of the fitness apps for Oculus yet, are they pretty effective? I want to try to get back in shape, i have a few pieces of equipment at my house, including a treadmill, but I have been thinking about trying some of the fitness apps.. are they mostly just hitting moving objects?
Keep an eye on Virtually Healthy ( https://virtuallyhealthy.co.uk ) - we're currently working on research to develop VR health/fitness programmes using various VR games :) check out an overview of our recent research project on our blogs page on our website!
VR workout total home fitness uses hand tracking which is good for upper body. It wil have you holding a pushup while lowerinng and raising your arm above your head. Only thing is you have to be looking at your hands for it to track. It free too!
There is hitting and/or touching objects, but these games mostly also include ducking and squatting to avoid objects. Also games that use dancing. Some give a pretty good full body work-out and a lot of people really get more fit by using them, myself included. And they are fun! Apps that include exercise equipment are also a lot of fun. I use two apps with my exercise bike and all I needed for that is a cadense sensor to attach to it so it can measure the rotation speed when I am pedaling. These are free apps but with a paid montly subscription. One has a free version that is very limited (a ride that changes per month and a game that changes per week). On SideQuest there is a test version for running on the spot or on a treadmill called HappyRun. HitStream is also nice to try out as the prerelease is free. It has elemets of other (paid) fitness games, so you can see if the other games are something you would like. Also the demo for Synth Riders is on SideQuest. This is a very popular workout game, so great to test out if you like it.
