Privacy Policy

Our Privacy Policy comes in two formats. The first (the one you are reading right now), is the plain language version. It’s designed to be easier to read and understand. However, this version of the Privacy Policy contains drop-down menus in each section that you can click on to see the corresponding section from the full-text version of our Privacy Policy. Although this policy is easier to read, the full-text version is the one that’s legally binding, so we recommend you read both versions carefully. If you have any questions about our Privacy Policy, please feel free to reach out to us at contact@side.quest.

The Privacy Policy only covers our own content and site. It doesn’t apply to anyone else’s products or services, so if you access another site or download a game, you need to read that privacy policy to know how they’re protecting your rights.

What types of information do we collect?

We collect a lot of different information. Some of that is information you give us (like when you sign up for an account). Some is information you make public, like if you post a review or comment on our site. And some of it is information about you that we get in the background—like information about your IP address and internet activity. We will sometimes take this information and use it to make some assumptions about you and other users and your activity on our site.

How and when do we collect information about you?

We get this information in one of several ways. Some comes directly from you, like when you make an account or post something there. Some comes from automated technology, like cookies, when you are using the website. We also get some information from third parties (like the payment information we mentioned earlier).

We use four different kinds of cookies. Necessary cookies are cookies we need to let you use your account features properly. Preference cookies let us store your preferences (like when you tell us what language you prefer). Analytics and Performance cookies help us make our site and service better for you and other users by collecting information about things like pages that load too slowly. And Advertising cookies let us (and companies that have contracted with us) personalize the ads you see to make sure they’re more relevant to you.

We let you change your cookie settings for our website at any time in your account settings, or you can email us at contact@side.quest to update your cookie preferences. Just know that if you change your cookie preferences, it might prevent some features on our site from working properly.

By clicking the drop-down button below, you can review some information about cookies, including how to opt out of Google Analytics if that’s something you want to learn more about.

How do we use your information?

We use the information we collect in several ways. The first of these is for a “business purpose,” which means something we use to operate our site properly. There are a few specific business purposes that require us to use your data.

First, we use your data for security. For example, there are a lot of restrictions out there about games that are only playable in certain areas, or there are games that should only be played by adults. We use your information to make sure our service is safe and we aren’t breaking any laws.

Next, we use your data to help us keep things running smoothly. We need to know what games you have in your account, for instance, so we know what you have access to. We also use your data to improve the service, so we can keep things from getting too buggy and so we can figure out what kinds of games and experiences our users are looking for. We also use certain kinds of information, like location data and information you provide us about your age, to determine whether you are allowed to use the service, since different places have different laws about users under the age of 18.

We also use your information to personalize your SideQuest VR experience. If you only like to play platformers, we want to showcase platformers, not RPGs. Everyone is different, and there are a lot of games out there. Your information helps us figure out what you’re most likely to find worthwhile.

Finally, we use your information to communicate with you. We’ll send you an email if we update our Terms of Service, for instance, or to help you reset your password.

Sometimes we use your information for a “commercial purpose,” which means we use it for reasons that benefit our company. There are a few different commercial purposes for which we use your data.

First, we use it to advertise to you, and to target ads based on your personal interests. There’s a link in the drop-down text for this section if you want to learn more about how to avoid getting targeted ads in general.

Next, we use your information to advertise to other people. For instance, if you leave a review about how much you love a game, we might highlight that review so other users will see it first. Sometimes we might even use it on a third-party website, like a testimonial.

If you live in a country where the GDPR applies (such as in the European Union) and want to know more about the legal reasons why we’re able to collect and use this information for these reasons, the full-text version of the Privacy Policy for this section includes references to the statutes that allow us to do so.

How do we share your information?

There are a few different ways that we might share your information. For instance, we might provide third parties with information that’s connected with your ability to use our site, like when we let a developer know that you’ve downloaded their game. If we sell the company (or if the company goes through a merger or bankruptcy or anything like that), we may also provide your information to any company that takes over for us. We’ll share your information when we’re required by law to do so (like if we get a subpoena), and we might share it if we’re worried that you’re doing something dangerous or illegal so we can keep people safe. We share your information with companies we contract with to advertise our products to you after you leave our website. And, finally, we share public content (like reviews) with other users, such as by reposting them here or on our social media accounts.

How do we protect your information?

We take steps to keep your information safe. We have servers around the world (though most of our data is stored in servers located in the U.S. or Germany), and have both physical and digital protections in place to help prevent any kind of data breach. That doesn’t mean people won’t try to hack your data, or that we guarantee your information will be 100% safe, but if you ever have any concerns about it or if you think your own account login information has been hacked, please email us at contact@side.quest.

How long do we keep your information?

We only keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfil the various purposes we listed above, except when the law requires otherwise.

Do we transfer your information to a different country?

User data is stored in servers around the world. However, if you’re in the U.S., your data will be stored in servers in the U.S., and if you’re not, your data will be stored in servers in Germany. If you use our website or our service, that means you agree to let your information be stored in one of these locations. We work with third parties who might store your information in different places. When we can, we try to use servers that are local to our users’ countries.

What are your rights when it comes to accessing, correcting, or deleting your information, and how can you exercise them?

We have procedures in place if you want to request more information about your data. There are different procedures depending on where you live (since different places have different privacy laws that apply). Click the drop-down button for more details about some of these rights based on where you live.

How do we protect the privacy rights of children?

We don’t knowingly collect any data about children under 13, and only collect data about children ages 13 to 18 in certain places. In some countries, such as China, users under 18 are not allowed to create an account on our website or use our services, and we don’t knowingly collect any data about them. If we find out that we have data about someone younger, we will delete it. In any case, we don’t share such information with any third parties.

How can you opt-out from marketing communications?

You aren’t required to get marketing emails from us in order to use our service. If you want to unsubscribe, you can do so within your account settings or by contacting us at contact@side.quest. Just know that even if you do unsubscribe from marketing emails, we'll still send you other necessary emails (like information about purchases, account information, or updates to this Privacy Policy or our Terms of Service).

Changes to our Privacy Policy

Any time you use our services, the version of the privacy policy that’s in effect at the time will apply. We will make changes to this policy from time to time.
