Managed to play multiplayer on the free version with a friend. It takes a bit of finesse to link up, since the creation of private lobbies is a paid feature, but it is doable.

Like the comments before - the desync may cause a little nausea, but its really a pretty imagination (in VR) of a certain kart game involving italian plumbers.
