With this amazing program which was made by the developer of Oculus Air Link, you can play your old school Nintendo 3DS games in mixed reality. This is basically a new version of the former 3DS Emulator called Citra but brought to you for Virtual Reality. The program is pretty easy to install here with Sidequest so all you have to do is install the APK. The tough part is how to get the games. I am not going to say how to get the games but lets just say make sure you are obtaining them by legal means. Make sure your Roms are legit roms and be careful from where you get them. Once you have your rom you must drop the file into a properly labeled folder onto your Quest headset. Once Citra VR is booted up you are able to go through a few setups questions which ask you which folders your games are in and so forth. There are various settings to use within Citra VR as well. The options really dont mean much to the average Joe but there are some pretty cool things you can mess with performance wise if you are interested. The games seem to run pretty well once you do launch your game from the main menu. Remember, this program is in early access and there will be a ton of updates going into the future. There are some problems at the moment like the app crashing, games freezing, and a bit of stuttering in the mixed reality passthrough mode. I will say that it is super fun to play your old school games on a massive screen while still seeing your environment. It really works well with being able to adjust the top screen to your desired position and the bottom screen uses your touch controller laser as a stylus. You can also setup a bluetooth controller is you would like but your quest controllers work just find for the movement and such with the actual game. You can even add cheat codes in just like any other emulator would have if you are wondering about that. I know some of those games were hard! In summary, this is an amazing way to play 3DS games through emulation. The app does need some work but I am sure with so much support and with the creative mind working on it, the app will be here for a long time!

This is a dream come true!! This is how 3DS games were supposed to be played!

A long time ago I bought a 3DS and several of the N64 remakes in 3D for 3DS. But the tiny screen put me off, so I ended up never playing them. Now, finally I can enjoy my old games the way they were supposed to be. Huge + 3D + high-res.

CitraVR is able to upscale the old 3DS graphics from a tiny low-res screen to a huge 3D display in near 4K resolution! I was totally blown away by how much detail and resolutions the old textures of many 3DS games have. Those old 3DS games now look as good as, or in some cases even better than, the latest Quest standalone VR games.

Wishlist:

  1. Please enable re-sizing (enlarging) the upper screen.
  2. Enable toggling passtrough on and off while playing.
  3. In the graphic options, if possible, translate the resolution (now described as 1x-10x) into the actual x-y- pixel resolution.
  4. Add an option to display fps.
  5. Feel very good about yourself for having created something amazing which brings alot of people alot of joy. ;-)

Fantasy wishlist: Would it be possible to go DrBeef-style and increase the field of view? 180 degrees? 360 degrees? Headtracking?...... motion control....?
