APK 2nd Install Doesn't Appear in SideQuest or Oculus Quest 2 Library

using SideQuest v0.10.27 - trying to test sideloading the Zoom APK 5.9.3.4247 - but was in simple portrait phone mode, so I wanted to try a different version.

In the Oculus Library, clicked on the 3 dots and Uninstall. Unknown Source Zoom disappeared, and also doesn't show up in SideQuest Currently Installed Apps.

Attempting to re-install the same APK a second time (even after Quest 2 reboot and com.oculus.ocms Clear App Data) - SideQuest reports APK Installed Successfully, but the files never appear in the Quest 2 filesystem, and the App doesn't show up under Unknown Srouces. Tried a different APKi that I hadn't installed before, and it SideQuest Installed and the new Unknown Source App appeared immediately in the Lbrary.

When I kick off SideQuest Backup (to local disk or Cloud) I receive Successful backup on all items, but one failed task reading:

Failure: 'open failed: No such file or directory'

But I cannot tell what the task is trying to do as I can't locate the log files related to the error and there doesn't seem to be details available for a Failed Task - only Retry or Clear Failed.

Any ideas?

Thanks for reaching out. On first look it seems that issue might be related to the service Oculus provides and not something we can help with directly. Hi Shane,

I am also seeing the exact same issue with this version (v0.10.27) - and I have a strong feeling this is a Sidequest issue, not an Oculus one because I was sideloading apps fine yesterday and today right up until I made the mistake of hitting the 'update' button in the sidequest app and downloading the latest version.

I see the exact same behavior as the OP (fndtn) above - sidequest says APK installed fine, but then it doesn't show up either under Sidequest currently installed apps or in the Quest 2 Unknown Sources section.

Just to clarify - sideloading Unity APKs with Sidequest was working fine for me last night and today, right up until I updated the Sidequest app, then it immediately started behaving as OP mentioned.

We have a critical delivery soon and need to complete some more testing - can you guys please look into this further for us?

OK, I just reverted to a version of sidequest from over a year ago and issue is still there... so strange that the breakage coincided with updating my sidequest app today, but it does appear that, now, no sidequest version is working for our APK uploads.

Shane, hope there's something you guys can do about this soon - I'm happy to help with your investigation if needed.

Yeh SideQuest hasn't changed all that much in a while so it's unlikely to be the cause. A factory reset may be your only option. I would say that the app probably is in the SideQuest currently installed list, but you have to find it by package name. When SideQuest uninstalls something all it does is run the command adb uninstall com.package.name - this will always remove the app just like the Oculus uninstall method. In all my time at SQ this has never changed, it's ADB and it predates the quest and VR by a number of years.

Thank you, Shane - can you point me where SideQuest maintains its log files during installs? I didn't see anything left behind in the SDCard storage area on the Quest 2 related to the 2 APK's I'm attempting to re-install.

And of course, because this is sideloading, I do not expect Meta will support this at all. But I'm hoping to find a cache directory or some kind of index that keeps track of the APK inventory (similar to how a regular Android uses it for the Desktop Mgt icons. I was frankly surprised that the initial PeacockTV load worked at all - it just came up as a generic portrait mode format. But what isn't clear is if the Quest's built-in Uninstall routine works the same as the SideQuest Uninstall process, or if the Quest left something behind because it wasn't a Meta or AppLab package.

It's all standard stuff, SideQuest hasn't changed any in a while. You probably can still find the app installed in the currently installed apps list if you find it's package name ( not the same as the app name or the file name ). The only solution here might be a factory reset.

Don't be fooled into thinking they won't support sideloading - it's a process they rely on as much as anyone else. Remember that sideloading doesn't require SideQuest and developers and enterprise users use it all the time.

20220509 Update: I ended up going the Factory Reset route and abandoned trying to install the non-Meta streaming apps as every time it does work, the next VROS update manages to break the apps again. Thank you for all the suggestions! Android tablets were much easier to keep stable.
