Ready to get up close and personal for some VR combat? My name’s Rob, and these are my top hack-and-slash picks to make you feel like a warrior badass!

If you’re less about locking and loading and more about hacking and slashing (or, simply punching face), then you’re in the right place. Close combat games are visceral, engaging, and offer some of the best action-packed experiences in VR. Plus, that sword arm of yours will get a lil’ workout too—bonus!

Number 4 : Ancient Dungeon
In 3 words : Charming, Intuitive, Challenging
Ancient Dungeon just does so many things right for me. Charming art style. Intuitive physics. Fun enemies. A tough enough challenge with powerful bosses… As a rogue-lite dungeon crawler, it barely puts a foot wrong. And definitely don’t be fooled by the cute art. It can be a difficult game!

This has been a favorite on SideQuest for a long time now, so if you’ve been sleeping on it, take this as a sign to jump into the Ancient Dungeon and begin your quest for awesome loot and just a damn fine time in VR!

Number 3 : Swordsman
In 3 words : Medieval, Varied, Addictive
Slightly less fantastical and more medieval, Swordsman is another one of my favorites because of the sheer amount of variety on offer here and the obvious love that the developers have put into it with their very active work on updates.

The weapons are satisfyingly swishy and weighty, the campaign is great fun with some RPG progression elements, and the newer updates bringing in ranged weapons and the training room have been very awesome—competing in the archery leaderboards has been addictive to say the least!

Number 2 : Battle Talent
In 3 words : Explorative, Customizable, Rogue-lite
Battle Talent is a SideQuest staple by now—and has been one of my favorites since I first jumped into it. It’s a rogue-lite with procedural dungeons and a massive range of weapons to swing, spells to cast, perks to spec. to, and enemies to beat to a pulp. The sense of exploration is awesome and I’ve found experimenting with the massive range of gear really rewarding—helping you build your own unique character and fighting style.

They say in the game description that whatever your fantasy lean, Battle Talent has it all. And they’re not wrong. And, as if you need more convincing, they have a free demo to give you a taste.

Number 1 : Grimlord
In 3 words : Challenging, Rewarding, Intense
Do you like Dark Souls? Wish it was ported to VR? Look no further. I know this comparison gets made a lot, but Grimlord is just about as close as it gets. And I love the challenge.

You have a variety of weapons at your disposal with which to slice up your fiendish foes and there’s even a neat little parry mechanic—that you’ll need to make good use of if you’re going to survive! The sense of progression is also darned rewarding. So, chop chop… get Grimlord!
