Instructions:

Beef Raider XR comes ready to play with the original TR1 Demo.

How to play the included Demo:

1. Click "Sideload Now" and wait for Sideload to complete the installation.
2. On your headset go to "Unknown Sources"
3. Start BeefRaiderXR and grant app permissions.
   

Note: Saving is not working in the Demo, only in the full version.

How to play the full game:

To play the full game you need to own the original game. You can get Tomb Raider Classic (1996) from Steam and GoG or buy Tomb Raider Remastered (2024). Both versions include the original 1996 files needed to play this port. No matter what version you use, the port will look and play the same.

To extract the needed files from your Tomb Raider (1996) or Remastered installation, please use our "Beef Raider Extraction Tool". Download it here: https://github.com/DrBeef/BeefRaiderXR/releases/download/1.0.0/BeefRaiderXR-1.0.0.7z

First: Complete the steps above to install the demo. Start the game once, then proceed.

1. Unzip the tool to your PC and open "SauronDesktop.exe" (you may be prompted to install the .Net 7.0 runtime).
2. Click "Locate from Steam" to let it automaticaly recognize your Tomb Raider (Steam) install folder or search it manually (GoG).
3. Once the correct install folder is detected click "Extract Files".
4. Click "Download Audio Tracks" to download a converted version of the original soundtrack (mandatory if you want music).
5. Click "Open Mod Folder" and copy all three folders (Audio, FMV, DATA) to the folder "BeefraiderXR" on your Headset.
6. Start "BeefRaiderXR" under "Unknown Sources".

Controls

Control Schemes:
The port features two different controls schemes.
Modern controls and classic style "tank controls". Choose the one you like best in the in-game options.

Smooth / Snap Turn:
Set your prefered turn mode for 1st and 3rd person separately.

Auto 3rd person:
Set if the view should switch to 3rd person when Lara is performing an action animation like pushing, picking up, pulling a lever.

We backported a feature from the Remaster:
You can walk right off a ledge with trigger pressed and Lara will flip around and grab that ledge. Comes in handy.

Mixed Reality Mode

The Port features a MR mode. To enable it go to Options -> VR/Graphics Options -> Mixed Reality (On/Off) -> Apply.

MR mode is only available on standalone, not pcvr.

MR specific controls:
Press left thumbstick to recenter the view above lara.
Hold both grip buttons to pull and scale the world.

FAQ

Q: How to get out of the water?
A: Swim torwards the surface and stop holding "A" before you emerge. Having emerged swim close to a ledge. Now press the trigger while continue to swim torwards the ledge to vault yourself out of the water.

Q: When using the Extraction Tool on TR Remastered i get error messages a few files are missing. Is that a problem?
A: Ignore those missing PSX and FMV files. Those are just old company logos and credits that the Remaster is missing.

Q: I am using a non-english version of the game and the extraction tool gives errors. Why?
A: Right now the Extraction Tool only works on the english version of the game. Please set language to english in steam or GoG.

Q: I want to play the full game but I have a Mac so i can't use the extraction tool. What can i do?
A: You can extract the files manually. See here: https://youtu.be/yHmELNvs0is?si=BxQkBBmOm-2xeSgr . Or simply buy the Remaster and copy the DATA and FMV folder to "BeefraiderXR" on your headset. Instructions in the description on youtube.

Q: Will Tomb Raider 2+3 also work?
A: They do not work right now. OpenLara Engine doesn't fully support them.

Q: Does Unfinished Business DLC work?
A: A few testers got it running. We will write about it in the News Section.

Q: Is there a difference using OG TR1 (1996) or Remastered?
A: No the game will play, sound and look the same. OpenLara engine does not support the improved assets of Remastered. Tomb Raider 1 (1996) is much cheaper so you might want to buy that version.

Known Issues

Sometimes the camera will not face in the correct direction when it teleports to show a door opening after pulling a lever.

Some testers found it hard to get lara out of the water. Try to let her emerge to the surface by letting go of the "A"button before she emerges. When emerged continue to swim torwards a ledge and press and hold trigger.
