I am not normally one for leaving reviews. I have played dozens of VR games from the Oculus store and Sidequest. Some are very good, some are decent and some are just OK or worse. When it comes to early release SQ games, it's rare I'll play more than a couple times before I delete them.

Warplanes, a new title from Home Net Games, and their first ever VR game, is phenominal in both its execution and playability. It's not an expansive game when it comes to its size - missions mostly consist of flying around a small area in a relatively low res graphics environment - but the developers have managed to create something that is breathtakingly fun to play. It's hard not to sit back and marvel at the genius of the people who made this game while you sit in your WW1 plane, flying through the clouds as the sun glints off your wings. Similarly, as you find yourself thick in the dog fight, with enemy planes screaming past you, machine guns rattling, and you look out into the distance to see planes in a tangled mess as they fight for air superiority, you wonder how the technology to give you this experience can even exist.

What's even more special is that this game is in its first early iteration. It boggles the mind to wonder what it will look like in the months to come as they release new updates, fixes and features.

The improvements I'd like to see are mostly the same as others have mentioned here:

  • I'd love to be able to take off and land. It would add a whole new level of realism if I could take off to a mission, and then fly back home when its over.
  • Different difficulty levels. The game is probably too easy. I can shoot down 16 planes in a dog fight and not get shot once. Enemy planes mostly just fly around and don't make much of an effort to chase you down. Bombers are slightly harder due to their rear gunners. Enemy planes do seem to have a lot more success shooting your AI squadron members.
  • Would be great to choose which side you'd like to fight on - Axis or Allie
  • Free flight mode

Hi Matt, Thanks for a great review. We are a small team and such nice words give us the energy to work hard. In an hour or so you will see a new update with more difficult modes. Allie campaign will come next week - I just tested their first plane Airco D.H.2.
