Move like a pedestrian in a forest, reconstructed from videos taken by a helmet-held 360 camera whose trajectory is about 800m long.

Control instructions with the right controller:

  • Rotate on the left or right by using the joystick
  • Update the vertical offset (up or down) by using the joystick
  • Choose a location and teleport to it by using the virtual laser pointer
  • Teleport by using the index trigger only if the laser is green (not red)

Control instructions with the left controller:

  • Move continuously by using the joystick
  • Switch pannel and map by using the grip/hand trigger
  • If both map and pannel are disabled, switch between rendering modes (texturing or normal colors) by pressing the index trigger
  • The map shows the cloud of mesh vertices and the user location
  • If the pannel is enabled, switch between constrained and unconstrained motions by pressing the index trigger
  • The constrained motion controls your height above the ground
  • The pannel shows information about the 3D model and the selected motion.

Advice:

  • The 3D model is best viewed by navigating at the neighborhood of the gray cones (poses of the 360 camera that takes the input video)
  • Reduce the risk of VR-sickness by using teleportation instead of continuous motions
  • Reduce the risk of VR-sickness with continuous motions by moving slowly and only forward/backward
  • Constrained motions are better for moving continuously
  • Unconstrained motions are better for teleportation
  • Adjust the vertical offset after switching between constrained and unconstrained motions or at the very beginning

For walking in the tracked area:

  • (1) go to the center of the area
  • (2) launch the VR application
  • (3) switch to unconstrained motion
  • (4) teleport below a gray cone at a locally horizontal ground
  • (5) adjust the vertical offset (by steps of 10cm) of your height assuming that the mean of the cone height is about 2m
  • (6) now you can walk in the area with a good height
  • (7) go back to the center of the area, teleport to another location where the ground is locally horizontal, restart from step (6).

Reduced control instructions for the Oculus Go:

  • Remain seated on a swivel chair and rotate it to see all around you (Or stand and rotate by yourself.)
  • Move by using the touchpad
  • Switch between rendering modes (texturing or normal colors) by pressing the index trigger
  • Activate pannel or map by pressing the back button
  • Switch between constrained and unconstrained motions by pressing the index trigger while reading the pannel.

Notes:

  • Wait about 25s during the launch of the application in the Quest/Go
  • Details about computations and other 3D scans are available from my web page (SideQuest, Sketchfab, Youtube)
  • The downloaded package (337Mo) is the same for Quest and Go.
  • If the installation of the package does nothing, update SideQuest on your PC.
