(m)ORPH is an abstract, musical VR experience for Oculus Rift, Rift-S, and Quest 1 & 2. (m)ORPH is not a game, but let’s players interact with audio in real-time to create a dynamically evolving music environment. Sound is literally all around you, yielding an immersive 360 degree spatial audio mix that you get to control and customize. (m)ORPH features 15 ambient, experimental songs from innovative artists like Christopher Willits, Taylor Deupree, Symbion Project, Kodomo, Micah Frank, George Hurd, Yumi Iwaki, dvdv, Kodacrome, Matthew Mercer, Dispak, Bloodbeak, Khems, and Black House Triangle. The free VR app includes a free soundtrack called “(m)ORPH Artist Series” which will be available via bandcamp on Foil Records. Perfect for meditation or to escape the stresses of the world, the placid music and chill artistry will transport you to a new state of mind. Experience a whole new way of listening!
(m)ORPH is a passion project by audio technologist and electronic music composer Kasson Crooker, who spent over a decade at Harmonix creating music games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Dance Central. While working on HoloLens spatial audio technology at Microsoft, Kasson became enamored with virtual reality experiences and set his sites on creating an abstract art experience centered around interacting with music. Traditionally music is mixed in a DAW (digital audio workstation) using conventional tools like volume and pan to create basic stereo mixes. (m)ORPH reinvents this process using binaural HRTF spatial audio to place sounds virtually all around the listener (headphones required), using distance-based mixing to handle loudness (just like the real world), and using a custom-built Unity VR environment with audio tracks literally floating in space and with physics attributes (velocity, reflection, spatial orientation). The player and the unique 3D components together create organic, unexpected mixes in real time, similar to how a conductor and orchestra interact.
The name (m)ORPH comes from the art movement Orphism (1912-15) which was focused on producing art that was about pure form and sensation and "existence of an infinitude of interrelated states of being" ~ abstraction in its purest form. The (m) is interchangeable as music, motion, morphing, mutation.
