Half-Life VR on Quest

Return to Black Mesa and experience one of the greatest games of all times as you never have before - in Virtual Reality!

This release version is for Meta Quest. There is also a version for Pico.

Update: Version 1.6.4b fixes the startup issues and train controls in chapter "On a rail".

Getting started:

What version of HL1 do you need?
Buy HL1 on steam and then downgrade to Legacy Edition. https://store.steampowered.com/app/70/HalfLife/

Important: Here is how to downgrade to "Legacy Edition" of HL1:

Installation:
Step 1: Click "Download (Sideload)" to install the port!

Step 2: Start lambda1vr once on your headset until it shows the (broken!) menu screen. At this point exit the app! You will find that a "xash" folder has been created on your headset.

Step 3: Locate the installation of half-life on your PC, if installed from Steam then it will be somewhere like C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamApps/common/HalfLife/ (make sure you have downgraded to HL1 Legacy Edition - look at the start of the guide)

Step 4: From your PC, copy the whole "valve" folder to the newly created "xash" folder on your headset (This will take up to 10 minutes depending on your USB speed, 30 seconds on USB 3 ). Copy the whole folder - you can just drag and drop it into "xash". Allow to overwrite if asked.

IMPORTANT: Use the Sidequest explorer to copy over the files! The Windows file explorer might "loose" some files due to protocol issues between windows and android file system!

Step 5: Go to "Uknown Sources" in your headset and start Lambda1VR.

Update note: If you are updating from a previous build, please delete the commandline.txt in the "xash" folder on your Quest. That will allow the app to create an updated version of that file.

Comfort:
The intro-train-ride can be hard on the stomach! Press Y to enter comfort mode!
For more comfort settings see the options menu.

Lambda1vr Launcher:
Use the optional Lambda1vr Launcher to change resolution (SuperSampling), texture filtering and use it to switch between the expansions packs easily.

FAQ

"I can't start a new game!" - Make sure you read the guide and copied the valve folder from you steam installation. Make sure all files have been copied correctly. Delete the valve folder and copy it again. Using the sidequest explorer is most fail save.

"The game crashs when i try to start a new game!" - We have experienced hang crashes when starting a new game. If that happens, force close the app (two times) and try again. We are trying to solve, but it is a hard nut to crack, sorry for the inconvenience.

"How do I reload, switch weapons ...?" - See r/lambda1vr, lambda1vr.com for the controller mapping or picture on this side. (It's thumbstick up/down and quick tab the right grip button.)

"HOW DO I CLIMB LADDERS?" - Approach the ladder and briefly press A (don't keep it pressed). Hold the off-hand controller straight and do not tilt it. Use the thumbstick to go up and down.

"How do i jump onto ladders, yes i mean that scene with the elevator?" - Let go of the jump button mid air or you will bounce off.

"How do i swim up?" - Hold the jump button to swim up!

"I have a Mac, is that a problem?" - You might need an Android file explorer. A lot of people on r/lambda1vr have copied the HL files to quest using a Mac, see there for help. Or look on our discord https://discord.gg/vQKvS8Y

"I notice little stutter ocasionaly!" - Install the Lambda1vr Launcher from Sidequest to lower resolution (supersampling) a bit.
